Ligue 1 McDonald's • Journée 26 WEEKEND OF APRIL 2-4, 2027 ALLIANZ RIVIERA
Founded in 1950, Olympique Lyonnais entered a new era under the presidency of Jean-Michel Aulas, who led the club from 1987 to 2023. Today, the Gones boast an impressive honours list, including five French Cups, one Coupe de la Ligue, seven Trophées des Champions and, above all, seven consecutive French league titles between 2002 and 2008, a period that marked the club’s golden age.
For more than a decade, OL have also been renowned for having one of the best youth academies in Europe. Players such as Karim Benzema, Alexandre Lacazette, Corentin Tolisso, Alassane Pléa, a former Nice player, and more recently Amine Gouiri, all came through the club’s academy in the capital of Gaul. Olympique Lyonnais have also played a leading role in the growth and development of women’s football in both France and Europe.
At the end of an intense and entertaining encounter, Nice secured a hard-fought 3–2 victory over Olympique Lyonnais. Solid, determined and clinical, Les Aiglons quickly took the lead through Melvin Bard, who finished off a superb team move initiated by Mohamed-Ali Cho.
Despite Lyon finding an equaliser, Nice continued to push forward and regained the lead before half-time through an opportunistic Diop. After the break, Diouf produced a crucial moment by saving a penalty, before Hicham Boudaoui gave Nice a two-goal cushion at the end of a perfectly executed counter-attack. Brave and united until the final whistle, Les Aiglons held on to claim a valuable victory.
Across the last 10 Ligue 1 meetings with Olympique Lyonnais, OGC Nice have recorded 3 wins, 2 draws and 5 defeats, scoring 11 goals and conceding 17.
A product of the Olympique Lyonnais academy, Melvin Bard made his professional debut in December 2019 before gradually establishing himself as part of the defensive rotation during the 2020–21 season. After making 14 Ligue 1 appearances that year, the left-back impressed with his pace, discipline and ability to get forward. His performances for Les Gones earned him a call-up to the France U21 squad, before he went on to take part in the Tokyo Olympic Games in the summer of 2021. It was during that period that he joined OGC Nice. Since then, Bard has continued to develop and reach new levels. A tireless presence down the left flank, he has consistently delivered strong performances season after season. In 2023–24, he surpassed the 100-appearance mark for the red and black. During the 2024–25 season, he made 24 appearances, scoring 2 goals and providing 1 assist.
On 3 May 2002, on the eve of a crucial match against Lens that would decide the new Ligue 1 champions, the Olympique Lyonnais players had foie gras and wine. There was no better way to prepare for the match that would earn OL their first French league title than with a meal fit for a king.
The Groupama Stadium has a capacity of 59,180 spectators and is 288 km from the Allianz Riviera as Mèfi flies.
