Ligue 1 McDonald's • Journée 31 WEEKEND OF MAY 7-9, 2027 ALLIANZ RIVIERA
Founded in 1899, Olympique de Marseille are one of the major clubs in French football. Les Phocéens boast one of the most impressive honours lists in the country, with no fewer than 9 French league titles, 10 Coupes de France, 3 Coupes de la Ligue and, above all, 1 Champions League title, won in 1993. That year, Marseille, captained by Didier Deschamps, faced AC Milan in the final. OM secured a 1-0 victory thanks to a Basile Boli header, becoming the first French club to win the competition, which they are set to return to during the 2022-23 season.
In a superb atmosphere at the Vélodrome, Les Aiglons produced a spirited display against their Marseille rivals. After falling behind in the first half, the Rouge et Noir never gave up and showed great determination in every area of the pitch. Solid defensively and positive going forward, Le Gym gradually gained the upper hand before being rewarded with a deserved equaliser, as Elye Wahi coolly converted a Panenka. Nice showed plenty of resilience to fight their way back into the game and leave Marseille with a valuable point.
In the last 10 meetings with Olympique de Marseille in Ligue 1, OGC Nice have recorded 3 wins, 3 draws and 4 defeats, scoring 12 goals and conceding 17.
Before joining Le Gym in the summer of 2023, Morgan Sanson enjoyed a significant spell at Olympique de Marseille, where he spent more than four seasons between 2017 and 2021. At the heart of Marseille’s midfield, he became a regular key figure, making more than 150 appearances and playing an important role in the club’s memorable European run to the 2018 Europa League final. Hard-working, technically gifted and with an eye for goal, Sanson established himself as a proven performer in Ligue 1. He joined Nice from Aston Villa, returning to the French top flight with plenty of ambition. In his first season, Sanson lived up to expectations, making 32 appearances, scoring 4 goals and providing 3 assists, while showing relentless commitment throughout the campaign. His loan move was duly made permanent in May 2024. During the 2024-25 season, he made 6 appearances and scored 3 goals.
A former OGC Nice player between 2016 and 2019, Mario Balotelli had a rather eventful first meal after joining OM. Looking for something to accompany his pasta, the Italian striker mistook harissa for tomato sauce. Florian Thauvin later recalled how Balotelli immediately began sweating and asking for water, sparking laughter throughout the Marseille dressing room.
The Orange Vélodrome has a capacity of 67,390, while the distance between the stadium and the Allianz Riviera is 153 km as Mèfi flies!
