History and honours

Founded in 1924, AS Monaco are the only club competing in Ligue 1 McDonald's to be based outside mainland France, although ASM are fully affiliated with the French Football Federation. The club boasts an impressive honours list, with 8 French league titles — the most recent coming in 2017 — as well as 5 Coupes de France, 2 Trophées des Champions and 1 Coupe de la Ligue.

In 2004, Monaco became the fourth club from the French league to reach a Champions League final, having knocked out Lokomotiv Moscow, Real Madrid and Chelsea FC in the knockout stages. Led by captain Ludovic Giuly, Les Monégasques were eventually beaten 3-0 by FC Porto in the final.

Ligue 1 head-to-head

In the last 10 meetings with AS Monaco in Ligue 1, OGC Nice have recorded 3 wins, 3 draws and 4 defeats, scoring 13 goals and conceding 12.

Last home meeting: 08/02/2026

After an intense derby, OGC Nice and AS Monaco played out a goalless draw at the Allianz Riviera (0-0). With aggressive pressing and plenty of intensity in the challenges, Claude Puel’s men produced a solid display, epitomised by Morgan Sanson’s tireless work in midfield. Excellent at winning the ball back and dangerous on quick transitions and set pieces, Les Aiglons created several clear-cut chances through Dante, Ali Abdi, Sofiane Diop and Elye Wahi. The Rouge et Noir were also able to rely on an inspired Maxime Dupé between the posts.

Strong in the challenges and fully committed until the final whistle, Nice pushed hard for the winner for long spells but ultimately had to settle for a point.

Played for both: Sofiane Diop

Before joining OGC Nice in the summer of 2022, Sofiane Diop made his name with AS Monaco, where he took another step forward in Ligue 1. After a series of impressive performances in the Principality, the Moroccan attacking midfielder established himself thanks to his technical quality, ability to beat opponents and effectiveness from set pieces.

Having come through the academy at Rennes before spending the 2019-20 season on loan at Sochaux, Sofiane Diop used his time at Monaco to make a name for himself in the top flight, making more than 100 appearances for the Principality club. He arrived at Le Gym with plenty of experience under his belt and quickly established himself as one of the creative forces in the Rouge et Noir midfield.

Despite a knee injury that disrupted his progress in 2023, he remains a valuable asset to the Nice squad. During the 2024-25 season, he made 28 appearances, scoring 6 goals and providing 4 assists.

Anecdote

The mascot of AS Monaco since the early 1970s, Bouba the elephant traces his origins back to a gift presented by the Emperor of Vietnam to Prince Rainier III in 1954. The gift was a young elephant named Buon-Nam, who was nicknamed Bouna by his keepers.

Legend has it that, from the various parts of the park where he was kept over the years, Bouna would trumpet every time AS Monaco scored. Another version of the story suggests that it may simply have been a coincidence: Bouna is said to have trumpeted after hearing the roar of the supporters celebrating an AS Monaco goal.
