Founded in 1926, Football Club of Lorient has long pursued its quest for professionalism and obtained its first ticket to the elite of French football in 1998 by finishing second in a Ligue 2 BKT championship won by AS Nancy Lorraine.
The club's first-team coach was Christian Gourcuff, who helped the Lorient-based club stabilise at the professional level and achieve several seasons in Ligue 1 Uber Eats. In 2014, after more than 10 years at the club, Christian Gourcuff left the club for a new challenge and remains an emblematic figure of the Merlus.
FC Lorient has a Ligue 2 BKT title in 2020 and a French Cup in its trophy cabinet.
