Ligue 1 McDonald's • Journée 26 ALLIANZ RIVIERA Date to be confirmed
Founded in 1905, this iconic club of the French football landscape is returning to Ligue 1 Mcdonald's for the 2022-2023 season, after 10 seasons in the second division. Back in the days of its long-time coach, Guy Roux (44 years at the head of the team), the Burgundy club enjoyed its best years between 1994 and 2005, winning the league and four French Cups. AJ Auxerre even won the French Cup and Championship double in 1996.
AJA also has a history with the European Cup with, among other things, 3 participations in the Champions League, including a more or less recent campaign. Coached by Jean Fernandez, the Yonne club finished 3rd in Ligue 1 and qualified for the Champions League play-offs against Zenith Saint Petersburg. With a 2-1 aggregate score, the Burgundians join the group stage. The group will be very tough as the Abbé Deschamps will host Cristiano Ronaldo's Real Madrid, AC Milan and Ajax Amsterdam.

Focus on Mickaël Le Bihan: The Breton-born striker who started out as a pro at CS Sedan Ardennes joined the Gym in 2015 after a spell at Le Havre. For his first start in Ligue 1 he scored and provided an assist (6-1 against Bordeaux). Unfortunately the striker suffered a fatigue injury and will take time to return to the field. He played 27 games for the "Rouge & Noir" before joining Auxerre in the summer of 2019.
Focus on Alexis Trouillet
The young midfielder trained at Stade Rennais FC joins the Gym during the 2019/2020 winter mercato. Eager to gain more playing time, the native of the Saint-Etienne suburb joined Burgundy on loan in the summer of 2021. He will have a full season, playing 26 games (14 starts) for 5 assists. He was instrumental in AJ Auxerre's return to Ligue 1, playing in the three play-off matches against Sochaux and ASSE.
The Abbé Deschamps Stadium is the home ground of AJ Auxerre and has a capacity of 17,924 spectators. The distance between the Allianz Riviera stadium in Nice and the Stade de l'Abbé-Deschamps is 399 kilometres by Mèfi.
